What to expect and how to prepare

General guidance for a typical Canadian ER visit — not medical advice, and not a substitute for what the staff caring for you tell you to do.

Quick reference: the 5 triage levels (CTAS)
  • 🔴 CTAS 1 — Resuscitation: immediately life-threatening
  • 🟠 CTAS 2 — Emergent: could become life-threatening very quickly
  • 🟡 CTAS 3 — Urgent: serious, needs care soon
  • 🟢 CTAS 4 — Less urgent: needs care, not time-critical
  • 🔵 CTAS 5 — Non-urgent: could reasonably wait or be seen elsewhere

Patients are called in roughly this order, regardless of arrival time — so someone who arrived after you may be seen first if their condition is more urgent. Read more about why waits vary →
